UPCOMING GROUP CLASSES THROUGH STRATFORD RECREATION DEPARTMENT FOR 2008:

Start Dates: OCTOBER 21 & 22, 2008.

Basic Family Obedience Classes:

For dogs 5 months and up. This is a beginner level course which strengthens the relationship between owner and dog by creating a common language while setting a foundation for future training using Positive Reinforcement. This 7 week course concentrates on the five basic obedience exercises: Heel, Sit, Stay, Down and Come.  We also cover good manners for the family pet, addressing problems such as Barking, Chewing, jumping and stealing. Class runs on Tuesdays from 7:45 - 8:45 pm OR Wednesdays from 6:30 - 7:30 pm at the Birdseye Municipal Complex in Stratford, CT.  Classes are $65 for Stratford residents and $70 for non-residents.

Puppy Socialization Classes:

For dogs 10 weeks to 6 months old. Includes confidence building exercises, building a relationship, introducing puppy to different people & dogs. Emphasis on forming a strong bond and a friendly dog. Topics related to raising a puppy and preventing behavior problems are a major aspect of this 7 week course.  Based on class surveys, everyone's favorite aspect of this class is puppy playtime, where the puppies get to interact with one another off leash.  Class runs on Tuesdays from 6:30 - 7:30 pm at the Birdseye Municipal Complex in Stratford, CT.  Classes are $65 for Stratford residents and $70 for non-residents.

Intermediate Obedience Classes:

For dogs who have completed a Basic course and know the five basic exercises. Distractions and proofing techniques are added slowly. Introduction to off-leash work. 7 week course.  If you have attended a Basic Obedience course with another trainer, you may enroll in this class if your dog will stay with distractions, Come every time you call him and walk on a loose leash in close proximity to other dogs WITHOUT an aversive training aid (choke chain, prong collar, etc).  Class runs on Wednesdays from 7:45 - 8:45 pm at the Birdseye Municipal Complex in Stratford, CT.   Classes are $65 for Stratford residents and $70 for non-residents.

Specialty Training & Events

NEW CLASS: We are offering a "GET REAL" class in conjunction with Paws N Effect this summer.  This class is for dogs who have completed at least one basics course.  Class will run for four weeks, and will meet at a different "real-world" location each week.  Class will be held on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:00 pm beginning July 30, 2008 (next session TBD).  Locations will be chosen based on attendees.  Please contact Kathy at Paws N Effect at 203-281-7150 to register today, space is limited.

AKC Canine Good Citizen Preparatory Course: Six-week course at Paws N Effect Canine Training Center in Hamden CT.  This class is an advanced obedience class for dogs who have completed at least a basics class.  The focus of the class is on the ten stations of the CGC exam.  The CGC examination is included, and will take place at the class-time, the week following the last class.  The next session begins July 31, 2008 (Thursdays 11 am - 12 pm).  Test will be held the week following the last class, day/time TBD.

 
Recall Refresher: Intensive 4-week course at Paws N Effect Canine Training Center in Hamden CT.  This course starts at the beginning and proofs the recall exercise with increasing difficulty.  This course also covers attention-getting exercises and enhances your relationship with your dog.  This class is ideal for dogs who do not have a 100% reliable recall or dogs who need a refresher. $100.00 or take with the Crash Course for Common Problems for $185.00.  Check back soon for dates!

Crash Course for Common Problems:  4-week course at Paws N Effect Canine Training Center in Hamden CT.  This course will cover simple solutions for common problems, like jumping up (on people & furniture), crowding/rushing the door, inappropriate barking, chewing/stealing, nipping and paying better attention.  $100.00, or take with the Recall Refresher for $185.00.  Check back soon for dates!

"Snarky Dog Class" - Michelle is teaching a class for "reactive" dogs with Kathy Shea, CPDT at Paws N Effect Canine Training Center in Hamden.  The current Snarky class began August 11, 2008 (Mondays 8-9 pm for 7 weeks), next class to be announced soon.  This class is for dogs who act inappropriately in public.  They may react to people, dogs or distractions in general.  The goal of the Snarky Dog Class is to help you better read your dog to prevent the inappropriate behavior, and to teach and encourage your dog other, more suitable behaviors for social settings.  $185.00
