Apprentice Program Overview

This program is broken into categories of interest and priced for cost-effectiveness.  One may enroll in one level at a time.  There is a 10% discount for enrolling and paying for all five levels up front.  Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.  Prior-authorization must be granted to skip levels and a test may be administered to determine competency in any area before one is permitted to advance to the next level.  There is no time-limit on any part of the program; all components must be completed before credit is given for any part of the level.  Each section will contain both required and suggested media (books and videos) which may change without notice as new material becomes available.  Reading assignments may include whole books or excerpts.  Online courses may be substituted for certain books or videos with the permission of the instructor.  The student is responsible for purchasing or borrowing books or DVDs/videos.  In addition to this classroom-style curriculum, students completing the entire program are required to serve a minimum of 100 volunteer hours at a local shelter (20 hours for each level), and to join the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (www.apdt.com).  General requirements include, but are not limited to: attending regular meetings with Instructor (Michelle Douglas CPDT CDBC) which can be scheduled at the student’s convenience, living with and training student’s own dog(s), actively participating in the assessment and development of one’s own skills and learning process and exhibiting initiative to continue learning outside the scope of this program.  Additional requirements are listed for each level.  An individual’s requirements may vary and change to best suit the student’s needs.
